Website Design Wordcloud on ChalkboardWhen you meet me out networking, I often share my experiences helping small businesses and entrepreneurs who have previously created – or tried to create – a website for their business. I run across a lot of frustrated folks whose time would be better spent focusing on what they’re good at – running their business – and hiring a professional for things that are outside their wheel-house. Here are some things to think about when you are deciding whether to hire a professional designer or try to do it yourself.

  1. A Professional Website Designer will Save You Time (and frustration)  – You’ve all heard and seen the commercials promising that using “XYZ” you can create a professional website in minutes. Let’s be honest, unless you already have some design and coding skills, as well as knowledge of best-practices for web marketing, you probably can’t create a professional website in minutes (if you can, please let me know, I’d like to hire you). In fact, it’s likely that you will spend hours and hours just figuring out how everything works. And you will probably get pretty frustrated in the process. Hint: I spend a minimum of 30 hours on every website I create.
  2. A Professional Website Designer will Create a Unique Website – Even though WordPress websites usually start with a theme (or template) you don’t have to settle for a site that looks like anyone else’s. I’m not going to lie, I start every website with a quality, premium theme – that’s how I keep my prices low. But, I don’t stop there. Using CSS, I make every site unique – from colors that exactly match your branding, to layout and style choices, your site should reflect who you are and what you do. Your site should be an extension of your all your other branding and marketing.
  3. A Professional Website Designer will Create a Professional-looking Site – I’m sure you’ve seen websites that are very obviously DIY. Perhaps the colors on the site don’t quite match the colors of the company logo and branding? Perhaps things don’t quite line up on the page correctly? Maybe the menu wraps around because the space is too small? What does that make you think and feel about the company? Your website is often the first impression a potential customer or client gets of your company. Don’t you deserve a professional first-impression?
  4. A Professional Website Designer will Make Your Site Easy to Use – Your visitors need to be able to quickly and easily find what they are looking for. If they can’t understand what to click on to find what they need, they will leave your site and go to your competition.
  5. A Professional Website Designer will Attract Customers – The goal of your website, whether it’s to sell a product or set an appointment, will always inform the design decisions made by a professional web designer. Every element on your site will have a purpose when you choose to hire a true professional.
  6. A Professional Website Designer will  Create On-Target Messaging – No matter how cool your site looks, or how beautiful the layout and colors, your message(s) must be clear. Often, we want to tell our website visitors everything we know about our product or service. As a professional, your designer should help guide you to create copy that makes your visitor want to learn more.
  7. A Professional Website Designer will Have the Ability to Get You Found – The Dreaded Search Engine Optimization – Let’s face it, SEO is a mystery for most folks! The rules change what seems like daily. We all know it’s important, but how do we succeed in the SEO game? Not gonna lie, it’s a big challenge. That’s why there are professionals that specialize just in SEO and SEM (Search Engine Management). Lucky for me, I work with one of the best!
  8. A Professional Website Designer will Help you Be The Expert –  This is one of the areas that can be most challenging to businesses. Your expertise will shine through when you work with the right professional who will guide you to resources to help you position yourself as the expert in your field.
  9. A Professional Website Designer will Create Trust– Have you ever visited a website and thought (or felt) “I just don’t think I would trust this company with my business”? Maybe the copy was too salesy, or the images were too brash? You don’t want your website to look like an advertisement – but of course you do want results. A professional designer will help you avoid the pitfalls and present your business in a manner that will make people trust you and want to do business with you.
  10. A Profession Website Designer will Help You Establish Credibility – When visitors come to your site, you want them to immediately feel comfortable doing business with you. You could be the top expert in your field with the best products or services but, if your website looks amateurish, none of that will matter. A professional website designer will give you a professional website that will convey credibility and encourage visitors to learn more.

Bottom line: It’s okay to do it yourself, as long as it doesn’t look like you did it yourself.
